This is a Civil Defense message. Starting December 1, 2017, the County of Hawaii along with State of Hawaii are coordinating a plan to address a nuclear threat.

It is essential that Hawaii Island residents take time to become familiar with the State of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency guidance for nuclear threat at their website:  Then, take time to develop or update your family emergency plan based on this information.

Beginning with the December 1 siren test at 11:45 AM, the State of Hawaii Emergency Management Agency will introduce the nuclear attack wailing tone in addition to the normal steady siren tone. This new tone will be used in the unlikely event of nuclear attack. The sequence will be the normal one-minute steady tone, with a 10-15 second pause, followed by a one-minute wailing tone. During this siren test, local radio messaging will provide information on the meaning of each tone.
