County Clerk Stewart Maeda was born in Hilo and graduated from Waiākea High School in 1980.   He went on to attend San Diego State University where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology.   Returning to Hilo in 1987, he taught at Waiākea High School before pursing a career as a social worker.

In 1989, Mr. Maeda joined the Department of Human Services Child Welfare Services where he served as a Child Protective Services Social Worker.   He later became Supervisor of the Sex Abuse Unit at Child Welfare Services.   He left the Department in 2007 to work as a Family Conference Facilitator and Mediator for EPIC Ohana, Inc., a private non-profit agency, where he worked until 2012.

Mr. Stewart Maeda’s human services background brings a unique perspective to the Office of the County Clerk.

Maile was born in Kealakekua,  Kona, in 1952.   She attended public schools and graduated from Konawaena High School in 1970.   Maile is the younger of two daughters of Edward and Christine (Abril) Medeiros and comes from a family heritage deeply rooted in culture,  ranching,  and coffee farming in South Kona.   Maile is married to Russel David II (her husband of thirty-five years).   They have two children (Leinani and Michael David) and three grandchildren (Kehaunani and Makoa Tavares,  and Josiah Goulding).

Maile earned her thirty-year paralegal career working for local law firms in Kona from 1971 through 2004 and received her paralegal certification in 1996 from the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo.   Maile’s legal career included five years with the Kona Legal Aid Society of Hawai‘i where she served as the senior citizen advocate and Social Security Disability paralegal for West Hawai‘i.   Thereafter Maile began her political career as Council Member Angel Pilago’s Legislative Assistant (2004 to 2008)  and as Council Member Kelly Greenwell’s Legislative Assistant (2008-2009).   She left the County for a year and served as Judicial Assistant to Judge Elizabeth Strance.  In 2010,  Maile returned to the County Council as the Legislative Specialist at the West Hawai‘i Civic Center,  until her recent appointment as Deputy County Clerk on December 3, 2012.

Maile is privileged to have been given this opportunity to serve as Deputy Clerk and is eager to assist County Clerk Stewart Maeda, the Council Members, and staff of the Hawai’i County Council.   She enjoys spending time with family and friends,  camping,  fishing,  coffee farming,  lauhala weaving,  playing the ‘ukulele and cooking.
