The Department of Research and Development works with the local health care industry to support collaborative efforts that address Hawai‘i Island’s healthcare provider shortage by maximizing existing services, building the local healthcare workforce, and promoting innovative healthcare delivery models with the goal to deliver the best possible healthcare services essential to a thriving economy and population. Everyone on Hawai‘i Island should have a source of ongoing primary care, also known as a Medical Home. The Department of Research and Development is working with industry stakeholders to reach this goal.

The Healthcare Industry is an important part of Hawai‘i Island’s economy. The Bureau of Labor Statistics Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages reports that in 2012, the Health Care and Social Assistance industry contributed to Hawai‘i Island’s diversified economy:

Number of Establishments: 506
Number of Employees: 8,416
Total Wages: $353,014,000

Hilo Medical Center, Kona Community Hospital, and North Hawai‘i Community Hospital are among the top ten employers in Hawai‘i County.
