Animal Control & Protection Agency currently has two shelters, one in Kailua-Kona and one in Keaʻau. The Orchidland Shelter, located in Keaʻau, has a maximum capacity of approximately 200 animals. The Kona Shelter, located in Kailua-Kona, has a maximum capacity of approximately 100 animals. We are hoping to acquire facilities in the future to accommodate North and South Kohala and Kaʻu. Plans are underway to make significant improvements to the existing shelter locations, which are in need of repairs.

The care and safety of animals at our facilities, as well as the safety of the public, is of the utmost importance to Animal Control & Protection Agency staff.

The shelters are open by appointment to members of the public for the following reasons:

1. Verified pet owners or their authorized representatives who wish to redeem an animal and who have already provided valid proof of ownership to an Animal Control and Protection Officer.

2. Members of the public who have found a stray animal and wish to drop it off or have the animal scanned for a microchip. Sick, injured, dangerous animals or those posing a public safety risk are given priority.

3. Approved animal transfer partners of Animal Control & Protection Agency who would like to view our available animal population for the purposes of rehoming them.

4. Volunteers of approved animal transfer partners who are being accompanied by a representative of the rescue partner for the purposes of transporting the animal offsite.
