Animal Control & Protection Agency has been accepting all species of sick, injured, owner surrendered, or dangerous animals, and healthy stray dogs at both east and west Hawai‘i locations since July 2023. While we do not accept healthy feral animals such as trapped cats, mongoose, pigs, or chickens for the purpose of euthanasia, we do provide medical treatment for any species of sick or injured animal.

The animals located at Animal Control & Protection Agency shelters are categorized as follows:

  • Animals being held as part of a police investigation, including confiscated animals under Hawai‘i County Code Chapter 4 and Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes Chapter 711.
  • Unlicensed stray dogs and other animals, excluding cats, held for the mandatory 48-hour period under Hawaiʻi County Code 4-4-21 and Hawaiʻi County Code Section 4-3-1.
  • Stray licensed dogs held for the mandatory 10-day period under Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes § 143-10. The 10-day hold period is extended to microchipped dogs and cats.
  • An animal whose owner(s) have been arrested or evicted, are deceased, or have surrendered their animals.
