The Hawaiʻi County Fire Commission is a citizen oversight body established to advise and support the Fire Chief and the Hawaiʻi Fire Department. Composed of volunteer commissioners appointed to represent the island’s diverse districts, the Commission provides community input on departmental policies, operations, and priorities, ensuring that the department remains responsive to public needs while upholding professional standards of fire protection, emergency medical services, ocean safety, and rescue. The Commission also reviews and makes recommendations on the appointment or removal of the Fire Chief, fostering accountability and transparency in leadership. Through its work, the Fire Commission serves as a bridge between the community, county leadership, and the fire department, reinforcing public trust and enhancing fire and life safety across Hawaiʻi Island.
