Director: Roxcie L. Waltjen
Roxcie L. Waltjen was born and raised on the Big Island. She is a graduate of St. Joseph High School and the University of Hawai`i at Hilo where she earned her BA in Psychology and Communications with an emphasis in Elementary Education. Throughout her 30 year career with the Department of Parks & Recreation, she has worked her way up the ranks starting as a Recreation Aide with the Elderly Activities Division to her most recent position as the Culture & Education Administrator.
Deputy Director: Maurice C. Messina
Maurice C. Messina was born and raised in Louisiana and moved with his wife to Hawai`i Island in 2006. He is a Navy Veteran, having served in numerous capacities ranging from combat to the Jag Corps as a Legal Specialist, where he earned his degree in Criminal Justice. Maurice is a current mentor in the Big Island Veterans Treatment Court and has managed numerous private and non-profit businesses in Hawai`i. Prior to being appointed as Deputy Director, Maurice was a Legal Assistant with the Hawaii County Prosecutors Office focusing on community-related issues, special task forces, and cold-case investigations.
Private Secretary: Brittany Iyo
Brittany Iyo was born and raised in Kaumana. She attended and graduated from Kamehameha Schools Hawaii Campus and received her Bachelor of Business Administration degree from the University of Hawai`i at Hilo. Prior to being appointed to Private Secretary, Brittany was a clerk with the Department which allowed her to learn the basic operations of such a large and complex department.
