Committee on Aging
Purpose: To advise the Mayor and the Executive on Aging on the views of older consumers, service providers, and others in the field of aging concerning all matters of general policy in the development and administration of a comprehensive and coordinated service network for older persons in Hawaiʻi County.
Authority: Hawaiʻi County Charter, Section 4- 4, in accordance with Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes, Section 349- 9, as amended, and the Older Americans Act of 1965.
Appointment: Mayor, no confirmation required. Members are co-terminous with the Mayor.
Full Membership: Not less than 15 members appointed by the Mayor.
Specific Representation: The majority of members shall be sixty years of age or older. At least one member shall be from each of the following districts: North Hilo, South Hilo, North Kona, South Kona, North Kohala, South Kohala, Hamakua, Puna, and Kau. Members may be selected from Office of Aging sponsored senior programs, from federal, state, or county agencies which provide services or programs affecting the elderly, or from private, nonprofit agencies and organizations. They may also be individuals whose interests, knowledge, and abilities can contribute to solving problems relatedto aging.
Requirements: Hold at least one public hearing in each of the geographical areas of Puna, Ka'u, Kona, Kohala, Hamakua, and Hilo.
Meetings: Normally one meeting per quarter.
Financial Disclosure: Members must file Financial Disclosure within 20 working days of taking the oath of office. Thereafter, annual disclosures must be filed on or before January 31. The disclosures are confidential and will be kept on file by the Board of Ethics. County Code, Chapter 2, Section 2-91.1.
Qualities: Respected by the community as being community- minded and oriented. Able to focus on the community needs as a whole without catering to special or self-interest.
